Chapter 6

The plan seemed simple enough. Heather Ford was known to frequent the Carlisle Spa at least three afternoons per week... if not more. Anna, wearing the face of a slightly older woman, older than Heather at least, would join her, make with the chit chat. A maternal figure could lend an ear, offer some friendly advice.

“You good?”

Anna looked to Myrna, who had also shifted into a spa employee before they parted ways in the parking lot, Myrna planning to slip in through the back while Anna purchased her time out in the open.

“Get the goods and get out,” Myrna said, scratching at her newly human neck as Anna patted her familiar’s arm and shot her a quick smile.

“Just keep an eye out for me, and we’ll see what happens next.”

And with that, and a wink courtesy of Myrna’s suddenly human eyes, her familiar was gone. Anna paid her fee and slowly approached Heather Ford.

The blonde was on what had to be her second or third mimosa, her eyes bleary as her smudged mouth hung open. Feeling slightly sorry for the girl, Anna reminded herself that she needed to tread lightly.

But there was nothing in the rule book that forbade empathy.

“Hello!”

Anna made a point to widen her smile as Heather Ford shot her a glassy glance and chuckled around the rim of her glass.

“Hey,” Heather said, that and nothing else. The young woman polished off her drink and snapped for another as Anna tentatively settled in the chaise lounge at Heather’s side.

“Rough times?” Anna asked, her gaze never leaving Heather’s face as the young woman’s hazel eyes cut in her direction.

“Should I know you?” Heather asked, suspicion and the faint aroma of tinged orange juice dripping off her thick tongue.

Anna sighed as she managed a little laugh and leaned deeper into her disguise.

“People just call me Anne,” she started, needing something familiar to tie her to the task at hand. “I’m thinking of buying a house in these parts.”

“That’s nice,” Heather said. “I was going to have a mansion of my very own.”

Courtesy of the late Scott Davies, not doubt.

“How marvelous!” Anna said. “Whereabouts?”

The witch cared little for real estate, and a part of her feared that Heather would slide down a rabbit hole of open houses and escrow. But to her surprise, Heather’s messy lip merely trembled.

Anna picked up on the cue and reached for Heather’s arm.

“Why do you look so sad?” she asked.

Heather took a swig from her fresh mimosa, and she nearly choked on the bubbles dancing down her throat before she finally, sorrowfully, nodded her head.

“If you read even a little bit of the local news, you’ll know what’s up.”

How to play this? Anna knew the whole tale and then some. But if she was supposedly just passing through...

“I’m always up for a good story!” Anna said. “Care to bend my ear?”

Heather took another deep drink and wiped a few stray droplets from her lips as she leaned back in her own chaise and just dipped her toes in the water.
